The most recognized line in this collection is Footprints in the Sand. It describes a walker looking back over a life to see two sets of footprints, which become a single set during the hardest stretch because they were being carried. The image is older than the poem: the preacher Charles Spurgeon used it in a sermon in 1880. The author remains unknown. The verse passed hand to hand for decades before newspapers and advice columns spread it across the country in the late 1970s. At least a dozen people have since claimed it, with dates as far apart as 1936 and 1964, but no court or scholar has ever settled the question.

A sentence that no one can own belongs to everyone who has needed it. When a verse is chosen for an urn, the family is not quoting an author, but repeating what carried them.
