Playing Card Urns

This collection of playing card cremation urns is for the person who kept a deck in every room and ran the weekly game. Cast in aluminum with either a painted finish or hand-applied enamel and silver bands, these pieces feature engraved artwork of a hand of cards or the four suits. Available in full-size, sharing, and keepsake sizes, each urn can be personalized by us with a two-tone engraving of a name and dates.

These pieces honor the friendships built across a table through the steady, simple rhythm of a game.

A deck of cards is one of the oldest ways people have found to sit across from one another for hours. They are simple and portable, requiring almost nothing to begin, yet they build the specific kind of friendship that only comes from reading someone across a table and occasionally outthinking them. Through the steady movement of the cards, a quiet community is formed, one built on the rhythm of play and the shared time spent together.

This collection is for the person who built that community themselves. Their weekly game became a tradition that ran for years. Whether they were teaching cribbage to a beginner, playing euchre with the newcomers, or mastering bridge, they understood that a table and a deck were often all it took to make a friend.

The urns in this collection are cast in aluminum and feature two engraved artwork designs: a hand of playing cards or the four card suits. The finishes reflect a careful attention to detail, available in a range of colors through a painted finish or a hand-applied enamel with hand-detailed silver bands. Each piece is finished with a threaded screw-top lid and a felt base to ensure stability.

These designs honor the moments when the cards were simply a way to bring people together. The weight and texture of the metal serve as a tribute to a life lived with that same steady presence, capturing the essence of those hours spent around a table where the person's people were always present.

Because the memories of these games often involve a wide circle of friends and family, this collection includes full-size, sharing, and keepsake sizes. This allows a family to choose one piece or several, much like how a single game could bring an entire room together week after week.

To make the piece a lasting tribute, we can engrave a name and dates directly into the surface of the metal. Using a two-tone engraving technique, we make the identity of your loved one a permanent part of the piece, ensuring their name is held as carefully as the memories of the games they loved to play.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a deck of 52 playing cards created in the Netherlands around 1475. It is the only complete deck of ordinary playing cards to survive from the fifteenth century. Rather than hearts and spades, its four suits consist of hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. Each suit includes a king, a queen, a knave, and ten numbered cards.

Someone played with these cards five hundred years ago, and the whole deck came through. While the players change, the games keep the same shape. By choosing the cards for an urn, you are keeping a seat at the table for the person who always dealt.

If your loved one was the steady presence at the center of every game, these pieces may offer a way to honor that spirit. They come in sizes for one person to keep or for a whole family to share, so those memories stay close.

The decision of which finish or engraved pattern best captures their character is yours alone. Whether through the engraved suits or the detailed card hand design, these aluminum pieces are intended to stand as a testament to a life that found connection in the simplest of ways.

Choosing the right size

Every design comes in the same three sizes. Here's how families use each one.

Individual

Full size · Approx. 10" high

Holds all of an adult's remains, the same full-size memorial a funeral home provides. Choosing one urn for one person? This is the one.

Sharing

Mid size · Approx. 6" high

Holds a meaningful portion of the remains, measured in cups, not all of them. Choose this when dividing ashes between households, or keeping some close after scattering the rest.

Keepsake

Pocket size · Approx. 3" high

Holds a small token: a few spoonfuls. A personal remembrance: one for each family member, or something small to keep on a shelf or bedside table.
