Lord Stanley of Preston, then Governor General of Canada, announced at a dinner in Ottawa on March 18, 1892 that he would give a cup to the best amateur team in the country. He bought the bowl for ten guineas and called it the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. It was first awarded in 1893, to the Montreal Hockey Club, and for years afterward any club could simply challenge the holder for it.
