The eight-pointed cross on a firefighter's badge is the Maltese cross, a symbol older than any fire department. It belonged to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, who met fire used as a weapon during the Crusades and became known across Europe for going into it to pull out their burning comrades. After the order settled on the island of Malta in 1530, the cross took the island's name. Fire services adopted it as their emblem, and it remains on the station door, the helmet, and the badge to this day.

For nine centuries, the symbol has meant one thing: someone went in for the others. When you place this emblem on an urn, you are saying the same about the person you remember.
