The donkey entered American politics in 1828, when Andrew Jackson's opponents called him a jackass and he turned the insult into his own emblem. It was a work of art that made the symbol permanent: Thomas Nast's 1870 cartoon in Harper's Weekly forever linked the donkey to the Democrats. The same pen gave American politics both of its animals, as Nast's 1874 elephant did for the other party what his donkey did for this one.
This icon serves as a tribute to a life spent standing firmly by their beliefs.
