Albert Ballin, managing the Hamburg America Line from 1899, saw that transatlantic liners sat underused throughout the winter with no one aboard traveling for pleasure. This led to the construction of the Prinzessin Victoria Luise, which was launched on June 29, 1900 at Blohm and Voss in Hamburg. Sailing on her maiden voyage on January 5, 1901, she was the first purpose-built cruise ship. The vessel offered one class, 120 staterooms, a ballroom, a gymnasium, a library, an art gallery, and a darkroom for photographers.
