Miner Urns

Our miner urns honor those who worked underground, the families listening for the whistle, and the unions that stood together. This collection recognizes the skill of the trade and the multi-generational bonds of mining towns. Each cast aluminum urn features engraved miner's artwork and is available in full-size, sharing, and keepsake sizes. Each piece can be personalized with optional two-tone engraving for names and dates, offered in painted finishes or hand-applied enamel with silver bands.

These urns serve as a steady tribute to a life of labor and devotion.

This collection is for the families who lived by the rhythm of the mine. It is for the one who went underground to return home after a long shift, the one who waited at home listening for the sound of the whistle, the one who stood with the union for the safety of all, and the one who followed the path of their father and grandfather.

These pieces recognize the person who went down and came back up for their family, day after day, following a clock that the whole household understood.

Mining is a trade where the dangers are understood by the whole household even when they go unmentioned. It requires a precision that outsiders rarely credit, from reading the ground to sensing a change in the air when there is no room for error. Because the work runs through towns and generations, the industry is built on a legacy where many families have shared the same history and the same risks.

You may remember the quiet strength of a person who carried that skill and that history in their hands. They lived with a steady purpose, part of a lineage that understood both the weight of the work and the importance of standing together.

The miner's artwork is engraved into the cast aluminum, which is available in various painted colors or in hand-applied enamel with silver bands. Each piece is finished with a threaded screw-top lid and a felt base.

These details serve as a way to hold onto the memory of their labor. The metal and the hand-detailed bands provide a presence that matches the gravity of the life they lived.

Families can select from full-size, sharing, or keepsake urns to suit their needs. To make the piece truly personal, we can engrave a name and dates directly into the surface with a two-tone technique.

The safety lamp is a piece of science aimed squarely at keeping miners alive. Humphry Davy presented it to the Royal Society on November 9, 1815, built around a wick lamp enclosed in a fine metal gauze. Air and firedamp pass through the mesh freely enough to feed the flame, but the holes are too fine to let the flame back out, so it cannot light the gas in the workings.

This lamp doubled as a warning too: with gas present the flame burned higher and took on a blue tinge. For a family, the design on the urn is the shift that was worked and the person who came back up from it.

If the person you remember possessed that quiet strength and the precision required by the ground, then this design will recall the life they led. It serves as a tribute to the steady discipline that shift after shift demanded of them, for the family who counted on it.

The decision to choose this piece rests with your own memories. You may picture them at the end of a long shift, stepping out from the mine and into the light of the evening.

Choosing the right size

Every design comes in the same three sizes. Here's how families use each one.

Individual

Full size · Approx. 10" high

Holds all of an adult's remains, the same full-size memorial a funeral home provides. Choosing one urn for one person? This is the one.

Sharing

Mid size · Approx. 6" high

Holds a meaningful portion of the remains, measured in cups, not all of them. Choose this when dividing ashes between households, or keeping some close after scattering the rest.

Keepsake

Pocket size · Approx. 3" high

Holds a small token: a few spoonfuls. A personal remembrance: one for each family member, or something small to keep on a shelf or bedside table.
